Helen Whately Warns Kent Cannot Cope With 20,000+ New Homes

Stop Winterbourne Fields

Helen Whately has raised serious concerns about the scale of housing development planned across Faversham and Mid Kent, warning that local infrastructure “cannot cope” with more than 20,000 new homes proposed for the area.

The proposed developments include Winterbourne Fields (1,815 homes), Highsted Park (8,400 homes), Lenham Heath (5,000 homes), and other large schemes that together would dramatically change the character of the Kent countryside.

Whately has highlighted growing pressure on local roads, water supply, schools, healthcare, and public services, pointing to recent water shortages in Kent and increasing traffic congestion linked to Operation Brock and delays to planned road improvements.

She argues that housing growth should be focused in towns and cities with existing infrastructure, rather than building extensively on green fields and productive agricultural land. Campaigners opposing Winterbourne Fields share concerns that these developments are unsustainable and would permanently damage the rural character of the area.
